Version 0.18.1 (~ August 26, 2013) NEWS Download

Uraniacast is a non-interactive podcast downloader written in Tcl. It works from the command line under Linux or FreeBSD.

Its configuration is extremely easy. The minimum configuration file is:

set feed(comp.this_developers_life) {
    url {http://feeds.feedburner.com/thisdeveloperslife}

That's all! comp.this_developers_life is just a name that we've given to a particular podcast feed.

Pre-installation Steps

Packaged Versions

Just use rpm/tgz & ignore the rest.

  1. Unpack the tarball in any directory. We will refer to the result as $DIR.

  2. Type:

    $ cd $DIR
    $ make

    and as root

    # make install

    (replace "make" with "gmake" for FreeBSD). This will install files in usual system directories under /usr prefix for Linux & /usr/local prefix for FreeBSD. If you want a different location, just add PREFIX=/some/dir as a parameter to make:

    $ make PREFIX=/opt install
  3. Run "uraniacast". It will give you an error:

     uraniacast error: config: Tcl: couldn't read \
        file "~/.uraniacast/config": no such file or directory

    It's OK, don't worry. Type:

     $ cp /usr/share/uraniacast/config.sample ~/.uraniacast/config
     $ chmod +w ~/.uraniacast/config

    Edit ~/.uraniacast/config file. Remove all "treatment" lines there for this time.

  4. Read uraniacast(1) man page.

  5. Finally, type:

     $ uraniacast -vs

    than go to ~/.uraniacast/media and enjoy.
